Biography

Born in Hong Kong to Australian parents, Alexandra McTavish is an Australian artist living and working on the unceded lands of the Quandamooka people of Moreton Bay in Mianjin (Brisbane), Australia.

Her practice moves instinctively between oils, acrylics, ink and watercolour across paper and canvas. Her works explore themes of gender, sexuality, nature and solitude, often emerging through a process that balances intuition with restraint. Rather than beginning with fixed outcomes, McTavish allows emotion, movement and material to guide the work as it develops, creating pieces that feel both intimate and unresolved.

Her artistic language has evolved through observation, lived experience and an ongoing pull toward creative expression. Influenced by shifting landscapes, human connection and moments of quiet introspection, her work reflects an interest in the tension between vulnerability and strength, presence and absence.

Alongside her visual arts practice, McTavish is also a professional voice artist and jewellery designer.

For McTavish, art is less about explanation and more about creating space: space to feel, question, remember and return.
